Juneteenth in Houston: Recognizing Juneteenth Day
Albert “Al” Edwards is former member of the Texas Legislature representing District 146, Edwards served on three of the most influential Committees: Chairman of the Rules and Resolutions Committee, Chairman of Budget and Oversight of the Ways and Means Committee and a member of the Appropriations Committee. In 1979, legislation initiated by Edwards recognizing Juneteenth Day passed the Texas State Legislature and was signed into law. It is now an annual holiday in 43 U.S. states, celebrated on June 19th.
