Save Mt. Mariah Baptist Church, First African American Church in Fort Bend County!

The Mt. Mariah Baptist Church of Ft. Bend County, Texas, is leveraging the popular crowdfunding site gofundme.com to save their iconic building from – literally – being mowed down by progress.

And what a story! The Mt. Mariah Missionary Baptist Church was established by (4) former slaves just 11 years after slavery ended and was lovingly hand built by its congregation. The church is believed to be the first African American church in Fort Bend County.

Sadly the State of Texas has decided to build a new toll road right through the property, wiping away this iconic and historic house of worship, which has served its community for over 139 years! A Fort Bend County Commissioner initially agreed to have the building moved, but has since decided the county will not be involved to move it due to difficulties of the process and a cost of $150,000.

And that’s where YOU come in! Help save this church by going to https://www.gofundme.com/pleasesavechurch and donate towards the cost of moving the church.
